AAKY29 Kenya Family Safari

AAKY29 Kenya Family Safari – 6 Nights (ST75)

Day 1 Nairobi – Samburu (LD)

Drive into the Aberdare Mountain Range and stop for lunch at the Outspan Hotel. Continue north to Samburu National Reserve and your tented camp.

The Reserve is within the lands of the colourful Samburu people, close relatives of the Maasai, and harbours a number of wildlife species rarely found anywhere in any numbers. These include Grevy's zebra, the reticulated giraffe and the Beisa oryx found only north of the equator.

Overnight at Samburu Intrepids Club.

Samburu Intrepids Club is a luxury-tented camp in the midst of the rugged and savagely beautiful semi arid desert of northern Kenya.

Day 2 Samburu (BLD)

The day is designed for flexibility – rise early for a game drive or relax poolside and game drive in the afternoon. The children can choose from an extensive programme offered at the camp’s Adventure Club.

Scenically and faunally dramatic, for most of the year Samburu is sered under the unsympathetic equatorial sun. But relief comes from the wide swathe of the Ewaso Ngiro River which rises some hundreds of kilometres to the west on the foothills of the Aberdares and which vanishes beyond Samburu in the recesses of the Lorian swamp.

Day 3 Samburu – Lake Naivasha (BLD)

Drive to Sweetwaters Private Game Reserve for lunch and a visit to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary to see chimps which have been rescued from harsh conditions. Continue to Lake Naivasha for the night.

The 200-acre Chimpanzee sanctuary has been set up at Sweetwaters Game Reserve. A visit to this Sanctuary and the 30-minute boat ride (subject to fine weather) on the river among the chimps is a must. The aim of the project, initiated by Lonrho East Africa, Kenya Wildlife Services and the Jane Goodall Institute, was to set up a colony where chimps could be introduced, rehabilitated and taught to fend for themselves in an area similar to their natural living conditions.

Spread out over 110 square kilometres, a pearl in the bosom of the Kenya Rift, the waters of Lake Naivasha glisten silver as the sun slopes swiftly towards the west. Purest and highest of all the Rift lakes, Naivasha is also a bird sanctuary without peer. Over 400 species have been recorded here.

Overnight at Great Rift Valley Lodge.

The Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort enjoys one of the most spectacular views in all of Africa. It is perched on the side of the Eburu Escarpment, overlooking Lake Naivasha and the sweeping floors of the Great Rift Valley of Kenya.

Day 4 Lake Naivasha (BLD)

Today choose from the many optional activities available – including a special children’s programme.

The park is home to an abundance of plains game and birdlife. Walking is permitted, making it ideal for hiking, biking, and rock climbing. Boat trips on the lake are widely available, and are a great way to spend an afternoon or morning. Sunsets are always spectacular, with the haunting call of a Fish Eagle high over the Lake bringing the day to a perfect end.

Day 5 Lake Naivasha – Masai Mara (BLD)

Drive into the Masai Mara today arriving at your riverside tented camp. You may opt for a full family game drive this afternoon or the children can enjoy their own programme while the adults game view.

Probably the most famous of the reserves, the Masai Mara boasts an astonishing amount of game. Gazelle, wildebeest and zebra graze in large numbers and where prey is found so are predators. Not only is this a great place in which to find game, but the wide greeny-gold savannahs spotted with thorn trees make it ideal for photography.

Overnight at Mara Intrepids Club.

Sitting above a sweeping bend in the Talek River, at the confluence of the Masai Mara's four game-viewing areas, Mara Intrepids Club enjoys one of the most spectacular locations in the world's best-known wilderness.

Day 6 Masai Mara (BLD)

Enjoy both morning and afternoon game drives today. The Adventure Club at the camp offers exciting activities for children.

The famous black-maned Mara lions are possibly the stars of the Mara show, but cheetah, elephant, kongoni, topi, Thompson's gazelle, waterbuck, hyena, and primates are all here too. As with the rest of Kenya , the birding is good.

Day 7 Masai Mara – Nairobi (B)

Depart the Mara early this morning, arriving back in Nairobi at around midday.
