AAKY28 Classic Kenya Safari – 6 Nights (ST77)

Day 1 Nairobi – Aberdares (LD)

Drive to Aberdare Country Club for lunch and then transfer by hotel shuttle to you tree lodge. Tonight watch for animals as they come to the lodge’s floodlit waterhole to drink water and scratch for salt.

The Aberdare wildlife is awesome, the rich forest sustains populations of elephant, buffalo, warthog and several species of antelope, a healthy population of black rhino and also offers the chance to see some of the typical forest species, such as the giant forest hog or the shy and beautiful bongo, perhaps the rarest and most splendid of all Kenyan antelopes. Regarding the felines, lions show their mountain adaptation, tree-climbing behaviour and a longer and speckled coat.

Overnight at The Ark.

The Ark overlooks the Yasabara waterhole, perhaps the largest salt-lick in the Aberdare Mountains and the haunt of a variety of forest game unequalled in Africa.

Day 2 Aberdares – Samburu (BLD)

Drive north to the semi-arid region of the Samburu Game Reserve arriving in time for lunch. Enjoy an afternoon game drive.

The Reserve is within the lands of the colourful Samburu people, close relatives of the Maasai, and harbours a number of wildlife species rarely found anywhere in any numbers. These include Grevy's zebra, the reticulated giraffe and the Beisa oryx found only north of the equator.

Overnight at Samburu Serena Lodge.

Set in a landscape of endless skies, dust-red plains and palm-fringed rivers, this refreshingly rustic lodge is renowned for the timeless beauty of its landscape and the serene tranquillity of its setting.

Day 3 Samburu (BLD )

Look out for reticulated giraffe, grevy’s zebra and gerenuk – all indigenous to this region – on your morning and afternoon game drives.

Scenically and faunally dramatic, for most of the year Samburu is seared under the unsympathetic equatorial sun. But relief comes from the wide swathe of the Ewaso Ngiro River which rises some hundreds of kilometres to the west on the foothills of the Aberdares and which vanishes beyond Samburu in the recesses of the Lorian swamp.

Day 4 Samburu – Mt. Kenya (BLD)

After early morning game viewing in Samburu, drive south to the Mt. Kenya Safari Club, arriving in time for lunch. The afternoon is spent at leisure.

Mt Kenya , Africa 's second highest peak is regarded as the realm of Ngai, god of the local Kikuyu people. Traditionally, all Kikuyu homes were built to face this sacred peak. They call it Kirinyaga, or place of light. The mountain itself is an awe-inspiring sight with its ragged peaks, and equatorial snow. But the Mountain is surrounded by a belt of verdant forest that is an equally fascinating destination.

Overnight at Mt. Kenya Safari Club.

With magnificent views of majestic Mount Kenya, the Safari Club, set in over 100 acres of landscaped gardens, offers a unique blend of comfort, relaxation and adventure.

Day 5 Mt. Kenya – Masai Mara (BLD)

Transfer to the airstrip for a scheduled light aircraft flight to the Masai Mara (included). After lunch at your camp, enjoy a game drive in Kenya’s most famous reserve.

Probably the most famous of the reserves, the Masai Mara boasts an astonishing amount of game. Gazelle, wildebeest and zebra graze in large numbers and where prey is found so are predators. Not only is this a great place in which to find game, but the wide greeny-gold savannahs spotted with thorn trees make it ideal for photography.

Overnight at Mara Safari Club.

The camp is positioned on an ox-bow of the Mara River, so that all en-suite tents have a view of the hippo-filled river.

Day 6 Masai Mara (BLD)

A full day in the Mara enjoying both morning and afternoon game drives in Club vehicles.

The famous black-maned Mara lions are possibly the stars of the Mara show, but cheetah, elephant, kongoni, topi, Thompson's gazelle, waterbuck, hyena, and primates are all here too. As with the rest of Kenya, the birding is good.

Overnight at Mara Safari Club.

Day 7 Masai Mara – Nairobi (B)

Enjoy one last game drive before breakfast this morning. Transfer to the airstrip for a scheduled light aircraft transfer (included) to Nairobi.
