The Great Zambezi Trail - Canoe Safari

The Great Zambezi Trail is a three-night/four-day safari on the Zambian bank of the Lower Zambezi Valley with overnight stops at our riverside lodges en-route. The first night is spent at Kayila Lodge, the second at Royal Zambezi Lodge and the third night at Mwambashi River Lodge.

This is not an endurance trip and we adopt a very relaxed and leisurely pace. Due to the fact that the lodges and pick-up points are only 20 to 30 km apart, time is plentiful to fully enjoy the beauty of the area.

Each day after breakfast, guests pack their luggage which is transferred to the next overnight stop by boat or vehicle. Most of the day is spent paddling in narrow channels which are separate from the main river and are prolific in bird and animal life. At the guide's discretion, the safari will make stops during the day for game and bird watching.

A fine cold buffet lunch is enjoyed on the banks or on the islands in the middle of the river. Tables, chairs and cooler boxes are carried in the canoes.

On arrival at the lodges, sundowners, tasty snacks, a full three-course dinner and the normal fine hospitality and comfort for which SafPar is renowned awaits you.

On day four, following breakfast at Mwambashi, clients either meet their charter flight at nearby Jeki airstrip or enjoy a game drive through the National Park to the Chongwe River with an onward boat transfer to the Kafue River and road transfer to Kariba or Lusaka. No canoeing takes place on the first and last day of the safari.

Departures for the Great Zambezi Trail are every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in the dry season from mid April to the end of October.
