CYCLING SAFARIS - Requirements

List of requirements for the Cycle Safaris

Passports, Passports and Passports. Forget them and you will not be allowed into Botswana.
Mashatu has bicycles for cyclists for hire. However if participants are in a position to bring good quality bikes with shock absorbers then these should be brought.
TyreLiners for tyres. At R20 per tyre, they are available from any cycling shop and are compulsory. Preferably also put Tyre Puncture Gel (for example Gatvol) into each tyre as well. On a ride with a group of cyclists at Mashatu recently, one bike was without precautions and seven with. The one bike without had 12 punctures on a morning ride. No other bike had any. PLEASE BRING TYRE LINERS.
Helmets for those that feel them necessary. They are a good idea and we recommend that they be worn.
A Torch per couple.
Energy supplements.
Sun Block. The days get really hot even in winter.
Lip Balm
Sunglasses (very important).
Hats that stick to the head. Preferably a peak when riding (if you choose not to wear a helmet).
Swimming costumes.
Sleeping Bags ( Wilderness Rides)
Towels (Wilderness Rides)
Water Bottles marked with your name on.
Very casual clothes be taken. Tracksuits, shorts and cycling kit. Warm jackets for the evenings and early mornings are compulsory. Good shoes/boots for both cycling and walking. Don't overpack. Tracksuits will be great as they can be pulled on over cycling gear. Shorts and light shirts during the day as it is going to get hot.
Please bring a small bag if participants are to spend a night out. This is to pack the basics for transport by vehicle to the nightstop.
Accommodation on the middle night out in a log ‘Boma’ at the Motloutse Ruins will comprise stretchers, sleeping bags and a blanket. Hot water and running toilets are available.
There are no telephones, radios, televisions.
Bikes being transported on the back of vehicles, should have the derailers well wrapped to prevent dust getting in.
