THE LIGHTHOUSE
The Bazaruto Lighthouse is situated on the north point of the island at LAT 21 degrees off 31'57" and LONG 35 degrees off 29 degress of 06 ALT approximately 100m above sea level being the geographical range 23,5 miles. The light is white with 3 flashes of 30 seconds each.
A fixed red light beam station with a range of 9 miles was installed in Bazaruto in 1894. In 1913 the present Lighthouse was completed and began functioning. In 1926 a radio transmitter was installed which is no longer in operation. The building is of square configuration with a central courtyard. The conic tower 18.00m high on the SE corner and entrance on the NW corner. The Lighthouse used to house the radio station/office. The Lighthouse keeper, radio operator, forester and their families were accommodated in the existing structure. The Lighthouse has been closed since 1986. |
