The most famous part of the city is its market – a blend of the Arab souk and Parisian “halles,” this feast for the senses offers literally everything from ripe fruits and vegetables to herbs to colorful saris and kitchen tools. Near the harbor, the Caudian waterfront offers a district of shopping galleries and hip new restaurants.
The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden dates from 1770 and was created by Pierre Poivre during French sovereignty. The immense garden features astonishing and remarkable plant species, including stunning giant water lilies. Of special importance is the royal palm tree – it flowers only once every forty years!
