Dr Sybille Quandt qualified as a veterinarian in Munich , and did a postgraduate degree in wildlife veterinary science. She has practiced widely in Africa and has immobilized elephants for research purposes in South Africa , Botswana , Mali and Tanzania.
She has been in charge of the veterinary care of the trained elephants at Abu Camp in Botswana for many years and is a leading figure in the animal welfare movement concerned with the humane and ethical treatment of animals in the wildlife trade.
She has taken part in many elephant translocation exercises and is familiar with the process. Dr Quandt is also a commercial pilot and flies tourists on helicopter and fixed wing adventure safaris to the famous wildlife areas of Botswana and other wilderness areas in Southern Africa.
She thus has a unique understanding of the needs of tourists, the welfare of animals, and the practicalities of elephant capture and translocation and will be able to marry the varying needs of these different elements to produce a format for adventure tours to take part in the Majete elephant translocation project. |
