Katavi Wilderness Camp

Katavi consists of a series of secret floodplains that open up in front of you as you arrive through their woodland fringes.

Katavi National Park, one of Tanzania's most westerly and remote parks, is only just beginning to gain recognition for it's beauty and the quality of it's game viewing. It is remote in the extreme and with just 200 visitors a year is the ultimate in off the beaten track safari destinations. If you have the time and resources, it is the definitive safari destination.

This park is for the connoisseur of Africa travellers who likes to visit the most remote places, away from the crowds.

The area under National Park protection at Katavi has recently been doubled to 4000 sqkm so that it has superceded Mikumi as Tanzania's third largest park. Yet while 120,000 people annually visit the northern parks, less than 200 reach Katavi and you will feel privileged when you look back through the visitors book to find the last person to have been there.

Lake Katavi and Lake Chada boast one of the largest population of Hippopotami and crocodiles and the floodplain's provide a habitat for an abundance of waterfowl. Its vast size, infinite grassland plains, isolation and inaccessibility have meant that herd sizes are huge and it is not unknown to see up to 1600 buffalo at once! Lion, and other predators, wait along the fringed woodland to ambush the game as it returns to the woodland for shelter at sundown. There's nowhere else like it!

Accommodation
Katavi wilderness camp is very exclusive and located in the best game area so that you can watch the daily movements of game between food and water and witness the dramas unfold before you.
Our tents, luxurious in size and furnishings, are cunningly set back in amongst the trees that line the floodplain, providing both shade and camouflage in the prime game viewing area of the park, where the wildlife are unaware of your presence.

Activities
Tom Appleby, an experienced zoologist and professional guide, will host your visit and lead game drives and walks.Specially adapted 4WD vehicles are used on game drives, with two-way radio and tiered seating for visibility.

Katavi camp is seasonal and will only be operational during the dry season from April until December.

The park has a similar climate to Ruaha National Park but with a completely contrasting topography comprising of a series of flood plains and fringed woodland that is teaming with wildlife (many of which are not found in Ruaha eg.Topi). You are surrounded by wildlife the moment you arrive! It therefore makes the perfect combination with Ruaha.

How to get to the Katavi National Park
This is the catch.

To give you a perspective, Ruaha is only half way from Dar as the crow flies and the park can only realistically be reached by light aircraft from Dar, Arusha or Ruaha. There is a Cessna 206 permanently based in Ruaha for this purpose.
