Activities
Enjoy a ' matchless sense of freedom to roam by foot, car, mountain bike or on horseback. You will be welcomed with smiles and waves wherever you go.'
Fly fishing
Fly fishing in Tanzania! An unusual sport to find in Africa, but we have lakes well stocked with Rainbow trout just waiting to be fished. The lodge can supply tackle and also instruction for any first timers. Trout breed in the wild in the cold mountain rivers and streams ensuring survival and sustainability.
Horse riding
There are endless paths and tracks to explore on horse back with little or no traffic to worry about. The horses are tough and very sure-footed, suitable for any level of rider. A guide will accompany you on your rides, both for safety and to make sure that you don't get lost amongst the tea or forests. An exhilarating experience, or horseback safari is also a fantastic way to view the scenery.
Mountain biking
At an average altitude of 2000m, and with plenty of up and downs, riding in the Highlands is no picnic, but if you are keen, the tracks and paths are all yours!
Bird Watching
There is a good variety of bird life on and around the farm. So far 210 species have been recorded but many more are sure to be added with further observations. The Mufindi District checklist contains more than 400 species and some of these are sure to be found on and around the Highland Lodge in the future, whether as residents or as migrants passing through.
Walking
An evening stroll around the lake, or a hike through the villages, tea or forest, the choice is yours.
Golf
For serious golfers, there is an 18 hole golf course 35km away at the Mufindi Club. However, we are constructing a 9 hole course on the farm below the lodge, ideal for a few practice holes before dinner, or fun game with the family or a starter for beginners.
Canoeing
Enjoy a magical canoe trip around the lake surrounded by rainforest to discover the bird life.
Scenic Drives
The highlands are a beautiful area with the bright green tea in stark contrast to the dark forest. A drive through the estates to the dramatic 2000ft drop over the Rift Valley escarpment is a day well spent. You will see the village life of rural Tanzanians for whom tourism is an unheard of business. |
