Highland Fishing Lodge
Cool healthy mountain air, evenings around a log fire, trout fishing, horse riding and stunning scenery are just a few of the reasons for visiting the Highland Fishing Lodge high up on the Rift Valley escarpment and discovering a different aspect of the African bush.

The Highland Lodge is built on a private 2000 acre estate surrounded by pristine tea estates, dark thick mountain forest and rugged bushland interlaced with lakes, rivers and streams. Although not on the usual 'tourist' route, the Highlands offer their own brand of magic. Ideal for relaxing with a good book, or burning off energy there is something for everyone. The estate is a working farm, providing organic meat and vegetables for the table here, and at our other camps.

Accommodation
Just nine log cabins are available as either double or family rooms overlooking the lake and golf course. After a day's exertion, a long hot soak is just what is needed before a sun downer on the bar balcony before moving inside to sit around the roaring log fire.

Rooms
  * There are 9 log cabins with bath/shower, toilet and basin, hot water.
  * There is no need for mosquito nets due to the altitude of 6000ft

  * Each room has either twin or double beds with additional beds added if required.
  * Drinking water is provided
  * Electricity is provided by generator until 11pm
  * Complimentary laundry service
  * Tea and coffee available all day

Meals of wholesome farm cooking accompanied by plenty of freshly picked vegetables are eaten in the octagonal dining room. After dinner you can enjoy your coffee before the fire in the downstairs lounge, or repair upstairs to the bar. For those still with energy there is a snooker table in a separate room.

Activities
Enjoy a ' matchless sense of freedom to roam by foot, car, mountain bike or on horseback. You will be welcomed with smiles and waves wherever you go.'

Fly fishing
Fly fishing in Tanzania! An unusual sport to find in Africa, but we have lakes well stocked with Rainbow trout just waiting to be fished. The lodge can supply tackle and also instruction for any first timers. Trout breed in the wild in the cold mountain rivers and streams ensuring survival and sustainability.

Horse riding
There are endless paths and tracks to explore on horse back with little or no traffic to worry about. The horses are tough and very sure-footed, suitable for any level of rider. A guide will accompany you on your rides, both for safety and to make sure that you don't get lost amongst the tea or forests. An exhilarating experience, or horseback safari is also a fantastic way to view the scenery.

Mountain biking
At an average altitude of 2000m, and with plenty of up and downs, riding in the Highlands is no picnic, but if you are keen, the tracks and paths are all yours!

Bird Watching
There is a good variety of bird life on and around the farm. So far 210 species have been recorded but many more are sure to be added with further observations. The Mufindi District checklist contains more than 400 species and some of these are sure to be found on and around the Highland Lodge in the future, whether as residents or as migrants passing through.

Walking
An evening stroll around the lake, or a hike through the villages, tea or forest, the choice is yours.

Golf
For serious golfers, there is an 18 hole golf course 35km away at the Mufindi Club. However, we are constructing a 9 hole course on the farm below the lodge, ideal for a few practice holes before dinner, or fun game with the family or a starter for beginners.

Canoeing
Enjoy a magical canoe trip around the lake surrounded by rainforest to discover the bird life.

Scenic Drives
The highlands are a beautiful area with the bright green tea in stark contrast to the dark forest. A drive through the estates to the dramatic 2000ft drop over the Rift Valley escarpment is a day well spent. You will see the village life of rural Tanzanians for whom tourism is an unheard of business.

The Highlands are accessible at all times of year. The 'dry' season runs from May until December with long rains from December to February and short rains (drizzle) from February to May.

The temperature during the winter months of June and July can be quite refreshing especially at night time, so it is advisable to bring some warmer clothing.

How to get to the Highland Fishing Lodge
  * The Highland lodge is 150km south west of Iringa by road. The nearest airstrip is an hours drive away at Ngwasi, although plans are laid to build one adjacent to the farm.
  * A visit to the Highland Lodge can be worked into an itinerary including Ruaha and Mikumi as part of a road safari or as an extension to the flying safari.
  * There are scheduled road departures from Mikumi National Park to Ruaha National Park and the Southern Highlands. From Ruaha National Park there are air schedules to Dar es Salaam, Mikumi, Zanzibar, Arusha and the Northern Parks.
