JOHANNESBURG:
Johannesburg is high voltage nouveau riche territory, fast paced and fun, modern cosmopolitan metropolis packed with vitality and verve. Apart from an exciting pleasure repertoire, superb hotels, restaurants and shopping centres pander to all tastes. Founded by gold prospectors in the 1880's, the city is the vibrant economic hub of South Africa and offers all the attractions of a glittering, modern city.
Nowadays, the upmarket hotels and restaurants are concentrated in the northern suburbs, where the shopping malls, such as multi-story Sandton City, rank with the best around the globe. As well as a generous selection of museums of every kind, Johannesburg also has plenty of open spaces to enjoy and an international famous Zoo and Botanical gardens.
Reminders of Johannesburg's gold mining past are still to be found on the southern perimeter and are nowhere better captured than Gold Reef City, a pleasure ground evoking the old pioneer days. Here visitors can, amongst other things, watch gold ingots being manufactured. Following the N1 southwards will take you to the Soweto turn-off, offering the opportunity to explore South Africa's largest and best-known 'Black City'. Take a tour of Soweto to appreciate its many contrasts of affluence and poverty, to see its well-equipped Baragwanath Hospital and enjoy an openhearted welcome in the myriad shebeens and places of recreation.
Exploring to the north of Johannesburg will reward the visitor with a variety of destinations into the wild, with walking trails, nature reserves, bird sanctuaries and conservancy areas. And still farther north is historic Pretoria, the Nation’s administrative capital, famous for its leafy streets and glorious Jacaranda Trees. Amongst its notable landmarks are the Old Parliament, the Palace of Justice, the magnificent Union Buildings, the Voortrekker Monument commemorating the Great Trek of the 1830's and the Cullinan Diamond Mine, where the world's largest diamond was found.
The cultural diversity of Johannesburg and its surroundings is easily explored in the multitude of traditional restaurants, markets and cultural villages. |
