The giant Etosha pan, a shallow depression which is dry, flat and white for most of the year, is the heart of the park. Most animals are unable to drink the water in the pan as its salt content is twice as high as seawater's. Hazy mirages distort your eyesight and make you see all sorts of things that are not really there! At least the game viewing is excellent - and the animals are really there! From December to April you may be lucky enough to see the pan with up to one metre of water in it, creating an algae-rich soup attracting thousand of birds.
