Mwambashi River Lodge

Situated deep within the relatively unexplored Lower Zambezi National Park directly opposite Chikwenya Island and on the eastern boundary of Mana Pools, lies Mwambashi River Lodge.

Mwambashi accommodates 16 guests in large comfortable East African style safari tents built on raised wooden platforms. Each unit has an en-suite shower, toilet and handbasin.

The accommodation units are tastefully appointed using vibrant ethnic colours and fabrics and yellow wood furnishings. All have private balconies offering superb private views over the Zambezi River.

Mwambashi Lodge is renowned for its fine cuisine and excellent service. Guests enjoy meals including full three-course dinners in a central thatched dining area which leads into a comfortable lounge with a well stocked reference library.

Overlooking the River and adjacent to the main complex is a raised balcony which is ideal for enjoying sundowners or simply relaxing or reading during the heat of the day.

Mwambashi's unique location makes it the ultimate safari destination. Of all the SafPar lodges, Mwambashi offers guests the greatest wildlife viewing opportunities.

The National Park is home to large herds of elephant and buffalo. Lion are common and plains game is abundant. Both early morning and late afternoon game drives are available to take fullest advantage of these opportunities. The Lodge also conducts night drives when leopard, hyena, civet and genet are often sighted.

The impressive diversity of birdlife within the valley makes it an ornithologist's paradise. As can be expected, the River itself forms a focal point of many of Mwambashi's game activities. Comfortable pontoons take clients on sundowner cruises and game viewing trips whilst short canoe safaris are available for the more adventurous.

Serious naturalists and conservation-minded guests will be interested in the scientific project to study the African Wild Dog that used to be based at Mwambashi. Although recognised as an endangered species, the area boasts a healthy population of these unique animals. Access to Mwambashi River Lodge is normally by air charter directly into the camp's 1000m airstrip from either Livingstone or Lusaka. The alternative is by road and boat with transfers available from Kariba and Lusaka.
