Waterberg Wilderness Lodge is set in the deep fertile Otjosongombe Valley, nestling amongst the red lichen-streaked cliffs of the Waterberg. The farm and surrounding area are steeped in history, as it was here that the historic Battle of Waterberg between the Herero and German colonial forces took place.
Accommodation in the farmhouse, which dates back to 1906, comprises five spacious twin-bedded rooms and one family room. Each room is individually furnished with an overhead fan, mosquito net, en suite shower and w.c and a private patio with lovely views of the Waterberg cliffs. All guests are ensured of a quiet and relaxing stay with personal attention from host and owners Joachim and Caroline Rust. Public areas include a breakfast room, dining room and lounge with a terrace built of local sandstone.
There is a gazebo for enjoyable afternoon teas and a swimming pool. The old farmstead is surrounded by a clump of jacarandas, beefwoods and makalani palms, creating a shady refuge on hot days. Adding to this tranquil setting is a large pond flanked by an enormous grove of bamboo. The farm boasts the region’s strongest natural spring and a variety of birdlife, reptiles and small mammals can be spotted.
Guided walks are informative and emphasize the flora of the area. Game-drives are conducted on the southern section of the farm which is an ornithologist’s paradise, especially during the months of November to March. Sunset walks along the plateau afford spectacular views over the valley with its rocks of glorious colours.
