This private game reserve is one of South Africa's largest wildlife sanctuaries, covering 33 000 hectares. It is conveniently situated 2.5 hours from Johannesburg, with prolific game and numerous lodges.

* Malaria-free
* Big Five area
* Diverse, unspoilt ecosystems
* Species-rich riverine environments

Welgevonden has been restocked with all the major game species, and is a showcase of modern conservation practices. Game fences between Welgevonden and the Marakele National Park were recently taken down, allowing the game increased freedom of movement and access to resources.

The area comprises an astonishing diversity of habitats, including riverine scrub, woodland, grassland and green lush valleys with rivers and streams.

The game has trebled since 1994, when the first elephants and other game were reintroduced.

Seasons:
The best time to go is during warm, dry winter days from Apr-Sep, as game viewing is facilitated by less dense vegetation.

Wildlife:
300 bird species have been recorded.

You should see: elephant, white rhino, eland, nyala, gemsbok, impala, tsessebe, red hartebeest, lion, buffalo, sable antelope, jackal, giraffe, wild dog, spotted hyaena, baboon, vervet monkey, bushbaby, aardwolf, brown hyaena, warthog, wildebeest, reedbuck, waterbuck, blesbok, klipspringer, duiker.

WATERBERG:
The Waterberg offers a mosaic of exceptional scenic landscape, a fascinating cultural heritage, an abundance of wildlife species and many nature-based tourism opportunities.

Vaalwater is the central village of the Waterberg area, the heart of the Bushveld region. The Waterberg has been described as South Africa’s best keep secret. Its rugged beauty, together with its diversity in plant and animal life, has led to the development of several exciting eco-tourism projects such as the biosphere reserve, the Waterberg Nature Conservancy - the amalgamation of conservation areas in order to protect more than 150 000 hectares of the Waterberg-habitat.

The Waterberg-range, incorporating many rivers, streams and swamps, stretches for 150 kilometres in a long arc from Thabazimbi in the West, Nylstroom in the centre to Potgietersrus in the east. Apart from the spectacular scenery of the mountains themselves, there are many game sanctuaries, nature reserves and farms.

The 75 mammal species include big game such as elephant, lion, white and black rhino, hippo, leopard and buffalo. African python and the Nile crocodile are also resident, and it is a birdwatchers’ paradise with more than 300 bird species.
