KAOKOVELD, NAMIBIA
Kaokoland, (or in Afrikaans, Kaokoveld) is often described as one of the last truly wild areas in Southern Africa, featuring beautiful mountain landscapes and rugged tranquillity. See the astonishing oasis of the Epupa Falls - a lush jewel in the crown of the Kunene River on your Kaokoveld safari.
Kaokoland stretches from the Kunene River in the north, down the Skeleton Coast Park to Damaraland in the south. Often inaccessible to saloon cars, its rugged pristine wilderness is perfectly preserved. Kaokoland is approximately 40 000 square kilometres, with just under 30 000 inhabitants, mainly Herero and Himba.
Visits to nearby Himba settlements, where people live in traditional manner, are possible. The photogenic Himba are semi-nomadic pastoral people who herd their cattle and goats in search of grazing. Many Himba maintain traditional dress and cultural codes despite the ‘temptations’ of the 20th century.
