GUIDED ACTIVIES: HLUHLUWE RIVER LODGE GAME DRIVES:
Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park offers excellent game viewing and a chance to see the "Big Five" from our open vehicles. Hluhluwe river Lodge runs scheduled morning and afternoon drives which are 3-4 hours in duration. As the lodge is not situated in Hluluhluwe Umfolozi Park you will be driven from the Hluhluwe River Lodge in an open game viewer to the Memorial Gate entrance to Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park. This trip take 30 minutes one way and although somewhat windy at times it is a pleasant scenic experience of rural Zululand. The vehicles are equipped with canvas roof and refreshments and light snacks are included in the tour. Guests booked on the fully inclusive package have one game drive per day included in their tarrif, should they wish to engage in additional drives these may be booked at the lodge and payed for on departure.

This is one of the oldest game parks in the world and is 96,000 hectares in extent. Leave the lodge early with picnic breakfast and lunch. Only 25 minutes from the lodge enter the park at Memorial gate.

See the Big Five
To explore this park you need two days but one day will provide an unforgettable experience as far as beautiful scenery and general game viewing is concerned. With a bit of luck it may be an awesome unforgettable experience because you could just be lucky enough to see Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Buffalo and Elephant in this 'big five' park.
Explore in your own vehicle
The "big five" are there in sufficient numbers to see in a couple of hours in fact but a day trip will make the chance of all these encounters that much more possible. The park is safe to navigate on your own provided you stay in your car and only get out at designated picnic sites and viewpoints. Again this is a wonderful opportunity to explore the area in your own vehicle at your own speed.
Refreshments at Hilltop Camp
Have your picnic lunch at one of the many scenic spots where there are tables and benches and toilet facilities. Have mid morning tea or a cold beer at Hilltop camp after exploring the Hluhluwe section and enjoy the view from the front terrace. Beware of those tame looking Warthogs!
Game Capture Unit
Head down to Hippo pools and on to Centenary Centre the home of the game capture unit and get an insight into the history and conservation methods of this world renowned team of game capture specialists.
Lion and Bhejane Hide
Travel north to Umfolozi and the Sontuli Loop into the beating heart of Zululand where King Shaka's hunting parties roamed the Royal hunting grounds in the 1800's. This is the dryer region known for it's Lion and Bhejane hide where you can sit quietly and wait for thirsty game to come for a drink.

Make your way back to Nyalazi gate departing the gate an hour before sunset from where you must drive 20 minutes to the N2 before heading north for a 40 minute drive to reach the lodge at sunset.

This a big day but really worth it and feel free to spread a blanket at one of the picnic sites and have a power nap but watch out for the vervet monkeys they are expert thieves.
