Day 5 – 7 : MADIKWE GAME RESERVE
Drive to Cape Town International Airport to drop off your rental car, in time for your connecting flight to Pilanesberg Airport near Sun City, northwest of Johannesburg. Pick up a rental car and drive to Madikwe Game Reserve, a Big Five, malaria-free reserve on the border with Botswana.
Madikwe – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries – owes its existence to a unique wildlife project, Operation Phoenix, which created the Reserve from 76 000 hectares (187 800 acres) of degraded farmland in 1992. The biggest-ever game-relocation programme in Africa, it involved conserving and re-stocking flora and wildlife which had long since disappeared from the region.
Ten thousand animals were re-introduced over a six-year period. Madikwe today is Big Five territory and you can also expect to see wild dog, both black and white rhino, extensive plains game, as well as over 340 species of birds.
Madikwe is malaria-free and thus ideal for families with young children. All the lodges featured here welcome children of all ages and most offer unique activities to ensure that the whole family has an exceptional wildlife experience.
Three overnights at Madikwe River Lodge (V) / Jaci’s Safari Lodge (L) / Madikwe Safari Lodge (D) on a full board basis
Day 8 - 9 : SUN CITY
Drive back to Sun City. In the middle of dry bushveld scrub this man-made fantasy paradise is set in a valley of the Pilanesberg Mountains. It is an oasis of lush green vegetation, water-features, casinos, golf courses and world-class hotels. All of the hotels have access to the extensive lake that is a central feature of the Sun City complex and offers various watersports. Each hotel has its own pool for those who prefer to relax on loungers and enjoy the sunshine. Pilanesberg National Park is home to the Big Five and is malaria-free.
Two overnights at Cabanas (V), Cascades Hotel (L) or The Palace of the Lost City (D) on a bed & breakfast basis
Day 10
