Gerard's gourmet menu is served in The Sugar Club, the hotel's signature restaurant, is both elegant and intimate. Bamboo blinds, raffia and wickerwork carry through the nostalgic "Natal plantations" theme seen in the foyer and lounge. Raffia screens and small table settings create a sense of romance which is enhanced by the superb ocean views.
The elements Cafe Bar, located on the lower terrace can best be described as relaxed, vibey and trendy. This exciting Café has been created to provide an upmarket, yet casual environment, with the use of predominately white decor and an eclectic mix of aluminium and marble with large glass sliding doors opening to panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. It is hardly surprising that KwaZulu-Natal is South Africa's holiday mecca.

Durban now boasts the world's fifth largest aquarium, the new uShaka Marine World, with breathtaking fishtanks integrated into a full-sized "shipwreck".
A short drive away, the glittering Sun Coast Casino offers an exciting evening out and the chance to meet Lady Luck. Umhlanga itself offers the enormous new Gateway Centre as well as the Sharks Board.
Further afield, there is even more to see and do. KwaZulu-Natal's lush game reserves, for example, make ideal stopovers before or after visiting Umhlanga. These teem with animals, including the Big Five, and the entire area is a birdwatchers' paradise, with many areas recording well over 400 species.
And for those interested in its fascinating history, KwaZulu-Natal offers several beautifully preserved battlefields, including the legendary Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift.
UMHLANGA - KWA ZULU NATAL:

The Natal Sharks Board has its headquarters nearby, and you can watch demonstrations - but find out in advance what's on their programme. Infinetely better is the small bird park, with its bright collection of exotic and indigenous bird species.
A stretch of coastal forest has been preserved inthe Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve, which shelters prolific bird life. A shell midden in the reserve dates back hundreds of years.
One of the most popular tourist destinations on the coastal area north of Durban, as a result, general facilities are excellent, and bathing is safe in the warm Indian Ocean.
NAME:
Umhlanga means "Place of Reeds" in the Zulu language, referring to the beds of reeds that accumulate on the banks of the Ohlanga river a few Kilometers North of present day Umhlanga Rocks.
TOURIST DESTINATION:
From it's humble beginnings, Umhlanga has now become one of the prime holiday destinations in the country and feature some of the best Hotels, Resorts, and Timeshare complexes to be found anywhere on the African continent. Every year millions of tourists and South African's embark on a mini exodus from all over the country to come and relax on some of the best beaches to be found anywhere and with close to 300 days of sunshine per year and with Shark nets maintained by the Sharks Board it is not surprising why.
PROXIMITY TO DURBAN:
Umhlanga is also blessed in that it is close enough to the City of Durban, some 20Km to the south, to have access to the consumer variety and convenience of a big city, whilst still being far enough from the city to have a uniquely rustic "Village" atmosphere, far removed from the urban Rat Race.

Umhlanga also has it's own Police unit, the Umhlanga Protection Services, as well as a Post Office, Library, Tourist Information Center, and even it's own Newspaper, The Umhlanga Globe.
ACTIVITIES:
Boats can be launched from the Ski Boat Club and numerous Deep Sea Fishing Trips, Scuba Diving Trips and Day Trips are available for individuals or groups. If this is not enough for the demanding visitor there are also chartered flights available from Virginia Airport as well as Micro-light flights over the Coastline.
For the less adventurous there are many options to choose from. Umhlanga has a Promenade that stretches all the way from the Breakers Resort on the Northern edge of Umhlanga, down to the last of the hotels to the South. This "Beach Walk" is accessible from virtually every beach-front complex and winds it's way past numerous entertainment centers, sites, coffee shops and beachfront restaurant in a well lit and safe environment patrolled by police personnel on Mountain Bikes. Well trained professional life guards are also stationed at all the swimming beaches along the Umhlanga Coastline

Lighthouse:
The town's lighthouse - an automatic type built in 1953 - is now an Umhlanga landmark. Probably the most famous landmark in Umhlanga, the Umhlanga Lighthouse, was completed on the 24th of November 1954. At night it beams it's light from a 25 meter vantage point as a warning to ships that venture too close to shore.
Mount Edgecombe Village:
A village near the town, set up as a town to support nearby sugar mills, exuding a British colonial charm. A Hindu temple graces the town's northern border.
Natal Shark's Board:
The only organisation of its kind in the world, offering many excellent day trips for visitors and expert video and live presentation.
Promenade:
A 2,7km paved shoreline route ideal for a jog or relaxing stroll.
Rustic Farm Village:
The ideal Family day out, with animal feeds, other children's activities and a pleasant tea garden.
Sugar Coat & Crafts Festival:
The best in local arts and crafts are proudly displayed at this enjoyable festival held on the Umhlanga Festival Grounds every Sunday.
Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve:
A small, scenic reserve preserving coastal forest. The remains of a Stone Age sea shell midden can be seen at the lagoon mouth.
