The Blue Train Technical Information

The Blue Train is 380 meters (416 yards) long, has 18 carriages and travels up to a speed of 110 kilometers an hour (68 miles an hour). Two diesel-powered generator sets, one always on stand-by, are used to supply The Blue Train's demanding power requirements. Each is capable of generating up to 550 KVA, with a 650-volt power supply to the train. The power car, which houses the generators, has space for technical and service staff accommodation, thus separating staff sleeping quarters from guests.

From Pretoria to Beaufort West two class 34-900 diesel locomotives are used. For the remaining stretch from Beaufort West to Cape Town which includes a number of tunnels, class 6E1 electric locomotives are used. A revolutionary new air-conditioning system, supplied by a South African company called Megchem, has been installed in the new Blue Train. It can keep The Blue Train cool even when the ambient temperature is 45 degrees C (115 degrees Fahrenheit).

A standard internal temperature of around 20 to 21 deg C (70 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit) is maintained throughout the journey. For the guests' comfort, each compartment has individual temperature adjusters ranging from 18 to 25 degrees C (65 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit).

At least 31 000 liters (6 820 gallons) of water are stored on board for consumption by the 11 guest coaches.

There is incandescent lighting throughout the train; it is more costly than fluorescent light, but emits a softer, more gracious glow, in keeping with the mood of The Blue Train. Recessed lights with dimmers have been fitted in all the compartments.

A service coach to accommodate the requirements of a full valet service, including washing machines, tumble dryers and ironing facilities is positioned at the tail end of the train. On each trip the Blue Train is accompanied by two technicians who attend to any technical problems that might be experienced during the journey.A team of mechanics, electrical specialists, air-conditioning specialists, plumbers and wheel-tapers regularly service the train.
